Job Description of Director of Religious Education (DRE)

Overview
 Member of Parish Staff.
 Responsible for attending staff meetings and retreats.
 Ex Officio member of Parish Pastoral Council and should attend all meetings.
 Responsible for personal growth, professional development, and continued formal education of him/herself.
 Part-time position, 20-25 hours per week.
 Responsible for establishing and communicating office hours (6-8 hours per week) and adhere to Sunday hours as established by the parish priest (arrive 30 minutes prior to CCD, etc.).
 Responsible for providing quality religious education for all parishioners, preschool through 8th grade.
 Responsible for combining sound educational principles with authentic teachings of the Church.
 Faithful to Catholic doctrine in word, deed, and action.
 Ensure that the Safe Environment requirements, policies, and mandates for parish religious education volunteers and him/herself are in compliance with the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Duties
1. Recruits and assigns catechists, helpers, substitutes, and parent-helpers according to the needs of the parish and their abilities and interests.
a. Initially done in the spring of the year and ongoing as needs arise.
b. Continually searches for new talent.
2. Responsible for training and supervising all above personnel.
a. Communicate area opportunities for continuing education.
b. Work toward catechist certification with diocese.
c. Keep personnel abreast of current trends in religious education.
d. Work one-on-one with teachers to lesson plan and gather feedback (at least 2 meetings per year).
e. Provide resources, audio-visual material, books, and curriculum to teachers.
f. Conduct large-group meetings at least 2 times per year with all catechists.
3. Responsible for evaluating all personnel and programs.
a. Group evaluations periodically to assess strengths and weaknesses of programs, books, and curriculum.
b. Individual evaluations yearly for each teacher.
4. Responsible for planning yearly programs, goals, and objectives.
a. Coordinate and procure curriculum material in accordance with diocesan guidelines.
b. Order materials and maintain a supply room of teaching supplies and seek input from teachers when stocking.
c. Order and schedule DVDs and audio visual materials.
d. Develop and maintain a budget.
e. Meet weekly with parish priest to update and inform of upcoming events and needs.
f. Participate in a yearly evaluation, coordinated by parish priest.
g. Maintain sacramental information, records, and allergy lists of all participating children.
h. Provides access and inclusion for children with special needs and allergies.
5. Responsible for providing support and encouragement for personnel.
a. Plan and execute commissioning of catechists.
b. Provide periodic social gatherings of personnel.
c. Coordinate year-end catechist appreciation day.
6. Work with High School Youth Minister as part of the Youth Ministry network.
a. Coordinate initial planning with parish priest and youth minister.
7. Oversee Vacation Bible School (VBS).
a. Keeps lines of communication open with director of Vacation Bible School.
b. Ensure VBS adheres to the same guidelines as the religious education program.
8. Responsible for sacramental catechesis.
a. Reconciliation
i. Work with teachers, helpers, and music ministers to develop curriculum for Reconciliation according to diocesan guidelines.
ii. Conduct parent programs to aid parents in catechizing their own children.
iii. Coordinate efforts between parents and teachers.
iv. Plan and coordinate First Reconciliation Liturgy.
v. Recruit and plan prayer partner program for children involved.
b. Eucharist
i. Work with teachers, helpers, and music ministers to develop curriculum for First Holy Communion according to diocesan guidelines.
ii. Conduct parent programs to aid parents in catechizing their own children.
iii. Coordinate efforts between parents and teachers.
iv. Plan and coordinate First Holy Communion Liturgy.
v. Recruit and plan prayer partner program for children involved.
vi. Plan and execute liturgical celebrations in cooperation with parish liturgist for parents and candidates.
vii. Plan and coordinate day of reflection with parental involvement.
c. Confirmation
i. Recruit and participate in a team which prepares candidates and sponsors for Confirmation.
ii. Provide retreat for candidates.
d. Elementary/Adolescent Catechumenate
i. Work with RCIA director in providing formation for Christian Initiation of Children.
Skills and Qualifications
 Degree in related field helpful, but not required ,willing to complete the  Diocese Educational Ministry   Program and any further new programs the Diocese offers
 Computer literate and able to learn parish data system program.
 Proficient in Microsoft computer programs.
 Excellent language and communication skills required.
 Able to manage tasks with little or no supervision.
 Able to dress appropriately for office and public speaking.
 Able to self-ambulate up and down stairs and lift up to 25 pounds.
